When one thinks of the marquee figures within the mixed martial arts world – that is, the Chuck Lidells, the Randy Coutures, the Royce Gracies - the name Jason Brilz doesn't come up too often. In fact, up until about a month ago, even the most dedicated followers of cage fighting would have had trouble pointing the man out in a lineup.  Despite having the respectable record of 18-2, the Nebraska native hardly made a blip on the collective radar of mainstream fight fans.  It comes down to quality.  You see, in the fighting world, a fighter is judged on the quality of competition he’s beaten in the past, and quite frankly, Brilz’ resume was a bit lacking in the big-names department.  A win over Eric Schafer earlier in 2010?  What does that even mean?

Then one day Brilz received a call from Joe Silva – the match maker over at the UFC – offering him the chance to step in as an alternate for a fight coming up in less than three weeks.  Most fighters, when given the opportunity to jump in on such short notice, are typically a bit hesitant to rush into any commitments.  What kind of fighter am I facing? Does my style match up well against his? How much will I be getting paid?  Those are the questions most fighters would consider before jumping in the cage at such late notice.  But not Jason.  He jumped on the opportunity without even knowing who he was going to fight.

The lovable lads from Chicago-based (and slightly Detroit-based) The Audition hit up Atlanta last month in glorious fashion – playing alongside notable pop-rock acts This Providence and Anarbor.  Front man and vocalist/guitarist Danny Stevens took a moment to discuss with Swigged! the release of their latest album Great Danger, his love for techno music, and why releasing this album was the band’s biggest risk to date.

Weird fact, but did you know that New Zealand is the home to over 40 million sheep?  Think about that for a second.  40 million.  In New Zealand, that’s about 10 sheep to every one person.  Just imagine… a sea of soon-to-become gyros just lurking around every corner… watching… baaahing.  It’s no wonder that the land of Frodo has had such a difficult time producing more than one* memorable music act in the past decade – how can you record an album when such a ruckus (created by the millions of chubby, sometimes-horned livestock) envelops an entire nation?  The answer is actually quite simple.  You bring in a lion.

Originating as a studio project headed by Ben Allen (Animal Collective and Gym Class Heroes) and Elijah Jones, The Constellations have a busy road ahead of themselves.  Not only are they hitting the festival circuit this summer (SXSW and Bonnaroo, for starters) they’re also slated to have a five day stint in England for the June 8th release of their debut album Southern Gothic. Swigged! caught up with the proud Atlanta band moments after hearing about their eviction notice to discuss how they got signed to Virgin Records, why one of their music video was deemed too inappropriate for YouTube, and how they spread holiday cheer with Justin Timberlake.

Hop on in!
